However, everything comes at a cost and this takes the form of adverts on YouTube. YouTube Premium offers users advert-free videos, which can be kept them playing when using other apps or when the screen is locked.

The premium version of YouTube costs £11.99 a month for individuals or £17.99 for a family plan – significantly more than either Netflix or Amazon Prime Video.

Students can shave a £5 off membership, taking YouTube Premium – formerly known as YouTube Red – down to £6.99 per month.

An important thing to note is prospective users should not sign up for YouTube Premium via the YouTube iOS app.

To land yourself a reduced membership to either YouTube Premium or YouTube Music Premium, users must be “enrolled as a student at a higher education institution in a location where YouTube student memberships are offered”.

Both the institution and student must be registered with SheerID for digital verification.

Any discount will not apply via the app, as it only applies to new YouTube subscribers.

However, first-time subscribers to YouTube Premium do not need to pay before they hit play.

The first time users sign up for YouTube Premium, they receive 30 days before the company will charge.

Chrome users can install an ad blocker by opening a new tab then clicking on the colourful square grid in the screen’s upper left corner.

On the following page, double click the Web Store option then search for Ad Blocker.

Users will then be presented with a number of options in the Extensions section.

Click More Extension Results to reveal the breadth of the content on offer.

It is a similar method for Firefox users.

Start by open a new tab, then click on the three lines in the screen’s top right corner and select Add-ons from the dropdown menu.

Next type Ad Blocker into the search box in the upper right corner.

Then select the app in question from the list that appears and click Install.
